The Hokey Pokey
IS What It’s All About
is the story of two women who encountered and overcame common
challenges by learning to take everything a little less seriously.
They discovered that life, after all, is just “hokey
pokey.” |

media / interviews |
Jenny was 26 when she found
herself caught in the madness of a public relations career, rushing
to achieve the American Dream. By all appearances, she did just
that. She had the Suburban house, the new car, the husband, the
dog, the fancy job title. Yet the long hours, relentless boss, and
pressure to achieve, achieve, achieve left her haggard and unfulfilled.
In short, Jenny was running fast and going nuts in the process.
Adele was 58 and at the pinnacle of her
counseling career when she contracted a rare and often fatal blood
disease called amyloidosis. If that wasn’t bad enough, she
had been caregiver to her husband with Alzheimer’s disease,
and her financial resources had shrunk precariously. It was dire
straits indeed. After months of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant,
as she teetered on the brink of death, Adele stopped taking it all
so seriously. As soon as she stopped letting her troubles define
her life, things got better. Taking a spiritual approach to healing
her mind and body, Adele soon found that her amyloidosis had gone
into remission. She accepted her husband’s slide into muddled
absence with poise, and her dwindling income became simply a line
in a ledger. Adele realized that the hokey pokey IS what it’s
all about.
Adele taught Jenny the lessons of her hokey pokey philosophy, and
the younger woman began to redefine what was most important in her
life. Jobs, appearances, approval from others, status, and possessions
brought neither security nor happiness. But adopting the hokey pokey
state of mind, along with a desire to laugh more, find true joy,
and focus on her real passions in life, Jenny made happier and more
fulfilling choices. Together, Adele and Jenny began to sing “Hokey
Pokey!” in the face of every challenge they encountered.
